Student Council attends 'Power of 10 Festival' at Sheffield Hallam University
Youth leadership and climate action were the focus of a ‘Power of 10 Festival’ at Sheffield Hallam University attended by Student Council representatives from The Laurel Academy.
They joined others from schools across South Yorkshire for the event, organised by youth-led
environmental charity Another Way. It aims to empower young people to take positive action for the planet and recognise the important role students can play in shaping a more sustainable future.
Throughout the day, students took part in a variety of interactive workshops and activities designed to help them explore environmental issues and develop the skills needed to create change.

Sessions included discussions about climate action, sustainable communities, and the creative
industries’ role in raising awareness of environmental challenges. Students also had the opportunity
to hear from experts working in green careers and participate in a question-and-answer session with
local leaders, where they could ask questions about environmental policies and the role communities
can play in protecting the planet.
Working alongside students from other schools, The Laurel Academy representatives shared ideas and
began designing collaborative campaigns that could be implemented in their schools over the coming year.

The event brought together around 150 secondary students from across the region, providing a valuable opportunity for young people to connect, learn from one another and feel empowered to make a
difference.
The experience allowed the students to develop important skills such as leadership, teamwork and
communication, while also gaining a first-hand insight into university life.
The students returned to school inspired and full of ideas, which they are now looking forward to sharing with the wider Student Council and school community.
