Goole Academy's 2 day Insight Programme at Hull and York Medical School
Skills needed to work in the health sector were explored by 12 Year 9s from Goole Academy during a two-day insight programme with the Hull and York Medical School.
They took part in a session in school on day one to give them an idea of what to expect on the second when they would be visiting the teaching hospital at Castle Hill. During that second day, students
took part in a range of teamwork activities.
They toured the teaching hospital and took part in a ‘messy ward’ activity. This had the students explore a
makeshift ward where the staff were being far from competent. Students had to identify the issues within the ward and feedback to the facilitators.
The day ended with the students showing what the ward should look like by carrying out a full correction.
The students had a fabulous experience and walked away knowing more about careers within the health care sector.

Meanwhile, Year 10 triple scientists had the opportunity to work with two fourth year medical students
from the Hull and York Medical School to carry out a brain and eye dissection. The topics are taught in the Triple Science curriculum and this was a great opportunity for students and staff to apply their learning to a dissection that would not normally be performed.
Medical students delivered a one-hour session to two sets of Year 10s, focussing on higher level
understanding of the structures of the eye and brain.
This opportunity applied to their current learning and gave them an opportunity to be inspired and take
part in something they would not usually get the chance to do.
This was also a great opportunity for Science teachers to develop their skills and understanding around
these two topics by having a soon-to-be-doctor teaching the deeper details.
