St Catherine’s Hospice wanted to display one in its reception seating area that family members could commission leaves for. Students volunteered to produce the memory tree, with the project used to develop their machining, hand tool, forging and welding skills.

The final design will consist of a large trunk with roots that will form the base, then main branches with ‘twigs’ that will be attached to a central branch. Staff from St Catherine’s have been to visit students to check on its progress, and the tree should be completed by Easter.

Assistant Principal Natalie Griffiths said: “Aside from being a very worthwhile project for a good cause, this again showcases the UTC’s technical qualifications. Students can utilise their skills on a real-world project, following a design brief and manufacturing a product to client expectations within specified timescales.”
